Frequently Asked Questions:

What is containerized shipping?

Containerized shipping is a very common method for international vehicle shipping.  Your cargo is loaded into a container made of protective steel similar to a semi truck trailer, but without wheels.  Vehicles are securely blocked, braced, and tied down ensuring absolute security during shipping.  Containerized shipping allows for the shipping of personal effects inside the vehicle.  The container is loaded onto an ocean going vessel and upon arrival clearance, the container can be loaded onto a trailer for delivery to your desired location.

How much does a container hold?
Containers come in two standard sizes of 20' and 40' in length.  A 20' container can hold approximately 1050 cubic feet.  The 40' container can hold approximately 2100 cubic feet.

What is RORO shipping?

This is the cheapest and simplest method of shipping. Vehicles are driven directly into the RORO vessel and secured to the car decks; securely inside the vessel, wind-and-watertight. Personal effects may not be shipped inside of vehicles using this method

Do I need marine insurance?

Marine insurance is optional and provides coverage against loss during ocean transit .  Consult your insurance company to determine whether marine insurance coverage is included within your existing policy.  Above All Auto transport will obtain marine insurance or all risk coverage for your cargo upon request (additional charges apply).

What does it cost for international auto shipping?

International auto shipping rates are determined by vehicle size, origin, and final destination.  Scroll to the bottom of the page to complete the quote request form for a response within 24-48 hours.  Click here to fill out our free online international quote form.

How long will the international vehicle shipping take?

Ocean shipment transit time depends on port of departure and port of arrival.  For example, a shipment from Miami to Costa Rica has a transit time of 1week and a shipment from Georgia to Dubai may take 4 weeks.

Will there be other charges due at the destination port?

There will be port handling charges upon arrival at the destination.  These charges cover terminal handling/off-loading and documentation fees for your container.  The cost at each port varies and we can provide an estimate of these charges if requested.

Will there be anyone to assist me with the customs clearance and pick-up of my container?

Yes, at the time of sailing we will provide you with the destination agent details.

When are the sailings scheduled?

Vessel sailings are regularly scheduled.  Above All Auto Transport can provide you with estimated sailing departure dates, but please be aware that dates are estimated and that the actual departure can take place a few days earlier or later than scheduled.

What do I need to do to prepare my vehicle for shipment?

Please make sure your vehicle does not contain more than 1/4 tank of fuel when shipping RORO and all items must be removed.  Only items such as spare tires that were original equipment belonging to the vehicle or after market items that were permanently installed can be shipped with your vehicle.  The shipping of personal effects is allowed when shipping via container.

Can I leave my license plates on my vehicle?

We recommend taking license plates off vehicles.

Should I worry about salt water from the ocean damaging my vehicle if I opt for RORO service?
All of the major vehicle manufacturers ship their new vehicles via RORO carriers

What documents are required to export my vehicle?

U.S. customs requires either the original title of vehicle ownership or a certified copy of the title.  The department of motor vehicles for the state of residence produces the certification of the title.  Also needed is your EIN or passport number.

What if there is a lien held or I possess a loan on my vehicle?
A letter is required from the lien holder (on the lien holder’s original letterhead) referencing the year, make, model, VIN (vehicle identification number) of the vehicle and distinctively providing you with authorization to ship your vehicle to the destination country.  The lien holder must sign and date the letter and provide a contact address and phone number.  Upon completion of the U.S. customs export clearance verification, the above mentioned documents will be returned.

Will duties and sales tax apply upon my vehicle entering a foreign country?
Applicable duties and sales tax are determined by destination country, your residence status and employment status.  Above All Auto Transport recommends contacting the embassy commercial office for the country of destination for the current rate information.
